Rush Hour Traffic!

Please see below for the Japanese translation!

This is always rush hour for me because I need to get my photos organized for my yearly family gifts.
I give my brother and two sisters photo calendars or prints for Christmas and for their birthdays.
Given that I now live in Japan, the printing and mailing are no walk in the park!

These nature pictures are from a recent ride I did to Shiroyama Park.
What a lovely view!

The clock picture is from a nearby school.
I have walked by that school many times.
I finally got the shot I wanted!

Today, I would like to talk about an amazing article.
This Dangerous Habit Keeps You Unhappy, According to  Blaise Pascal, by Thomas Oppong.
What a great article!

Oppong quotes Pascal.

“The only thing which consoles us for our miseries is diversion, and yet this is the greatest of our miseries. For it is this which principally hinders us from reflecting upon ourselves, and which makes us insensibly ruin ourselves. Without this we should be in a state of weariness, and this weariness would spur us to seek a more solid means of escaping from it. But diversion amuses us, and leads us unconsciously to death.”

Oppong then explains.

Diversion isn’t just a habit.

It’s a loop. It removes the very discomfort that would motivate you to fix something. Boredom, if you let it exist, is productive. It forces you to find better answers for your boredom. What you are missing and what matters. Those are uncomfortable questions. But you reach for the phone. And now the boredom is gone, and so is the question. And so is any chance of answering it. You’re entertained. You’re no closer to yourself.

Oppong's recommendation.

Most of what we do is not in pursuit of happiness. It’s in flight from unhappiness. And the thing you’re fleeing, the stillness, the honest confrontation with yourself, is the only place you can find anything meaningful. Every hour you spend filling the silence is an hour not spent asking what the silence can give you. Pascal made that argument four centuries ago. Before the algorithm, before the feed, before the infinite scroll. “I have discovered that all the unhappiness of men arises from one single fact, that they cannot stay quietly in their own chamber.” Sit with that. If you can.

I see this all the time. The business. The continual and eternal desire to be occupied, to be entertained, to be on social media, to be on the phone. As I have aged, I have realized the beauty in peace and quiet and reflection and doing nothing.

In his fascinating article, "Need to Solve a Problem? Neuroscience Says Try the Jack Reacher Method," Jeff Haden says the following.

For one thing, stimulation and “focus” are always within easy reach. Plus, it can feel unproductive, and even oddly uncomfortable, not to fill time with some sort of activity. How many people sit in a waiting room and just wait? How many people sit on a plane and just stare at the seatback in front of them? How many people take a walk without listening to something? How many people don’t listen to something while they’re driving? How many people work out without earbuds? (While it’s just one data point, the other day I went to the gym and counted 18 of 20 people wearing headphones. One of the two not wearing headphones was me.)

Speaking for myself, the headphones are off!

All the best!
