Speaking of amazing, my Preply tutoring experience has been one of the best things I have ever done in my life.
The superlatives just keep coming as I think about the benefits of that wonderful work.
For starters, I think that one-on-one teaching is truly the heart and soul of teaching. This type of teaching gives the teacher the opportunity to delve deeply into the curriculum and address students' needs specifically and comprehensively.
Secondly, I can use so many of my teaching skills and experiences: English as a Second Language teaching, reading comprehension, writing, discussion, grammar, presentations, literary analysis, foundational reading skills, and conversation. A real potpourri!
Thirdly, the relationship building has been fulfilling, satisfying, and inspiring. I have met people of all ages and English levels from many parts of the world, including Russia, Australia, the US, Mexico, Italy, China, Taiwan, and France. I love to teach, and this is enabling me to continue pursuing that passion.
It has been gratifying to help others with very important goals, such as preparing for a presentation to a supervisor, preparing for medical work, improving English skills for employment, and preparing to defend a PhD dissertation in English.
In many cases, I have been able to choose the lesson topics. This has given me the opportunity to include music and song lyrics, climate change, personal development, and other important topics of interest to me.
Given that all the teaching is online, I can work from home. Although the schedule can be demanding, I can schedule time off. I typically do 6-8 fifty-minute sessions per day, 6-7 days per week. I start as early as 6:00 am and finish as late as 10:00 pm. Thank heavens for those afternoon naps!
I can set my lesson fee. My fee is $9 per 50-minute lesson. I am now at the top of the commission scale, earning $7.38 per lesson. I do not think I will raise my $9 rate, as I love being able to provide my services at a price affordable for most people. This was a priority for me in tennis and remains so now.
I am very grateful to the Preply platform for giving me this opportunity. Preply has a substantial worldwide following that has provided unbelievable exposure. My profile has now been seen almost 8000 times!
Lastly, this tutoring has fulfilled another dream of mine: finding a way to help others that I can do for the rest of my life. I really love that I will hopefully be able to do this work for many years to come!
